Mission and Values

The Elcano Royal Institute's principal mission is to be a focal point for analysis and the generation of ideas of practical use to politicians, heads of relevant public and private entities, and to help promote an informed public opinion. This goal is based on the commitment of its members to certain shared values:

  • The achievement of peace in international relations.
  • Economic cooperation and solidarity among peoples and States.
  • Respect for human rights.
  • The promotion of transitional moves towards democracy and the consolidation of democratic values.
  • Harmony or, at least, tolerance among nations, peoples and, where appropriate, cultures.
Objectives

The Elcano Royal Institute's mission is a starting point from which to achieve the following objectives:

  • Analyse international events for the purpose of producing analysis, working papers and reports of practical relevance to decision-making.
  • Disseminate its reports in order to contribute constructively to public debate at both national and international levels.
  • Serve as a forum for encounter and debate to achieve a better level of communication among the public and private entities involved in international relations and international security.
  • Act as a focal point for the programmes, projects and initiatives of foreign-policy researchers and strategists both in Spain and, to the extent that this is possible, internationally.
